Today there are many drivers behind why agriculturalists and horticulturalists should be measuring and recording what goes on around them.

With consumers demanding higher quality food and environmental conditions, the need for measurement and monitoring technology will continue to grow. In addition, the need to conserve resources such as soil and water will drive the need to more measurement information technology. For much the same reasons sports land managers including sports and leisure grounds staff have to keep a very close eye on the use of irrigation and nutrients when it comes to managing their environment.

New Tool Makes Identification and Tracking of Crop Pests Faster

E-mail Print PDF
Growers and researchers can now use the new IPM Scope CAM from Spectrum Technologies, Inc. to aid in identifying and tracking plant pest and disease pressures. The 5 megapixel IPM Scope CAM captures high resolution pictures and videos in the field – without the need for an attached computer. View pictures instantly on the built-in 2 inch wide LCD display. Transfer images via an SD CARD or USB cable to your computer. The unit works like a digital camera.

The LED-lighted unit magnifies objects by 3-25x on the unit display and up to 300x digitally on the computer. Images can easily be emailed to industry partners for quick pest identification. The IPM Scope Cam is especially valuable in the identification and tracking of diseases and pests such as powdery mildew or aphids.

SPAD 502 Plus – Manage Nitrogen Effectively

E-mail Print PDF
Reduce your risk of yield-limiting deficiencies or costly over-fertilizing. The SPAD 502 Plus quantifies subtle changes or trends in plant health long before it is visible to the human eye. The SPAD 502 Plus instantly measures the chlorophyll content or “greenness” of your plant. Nitrogen (N) is a key element in chlorophyll production; hence, chlorophyll can be used as an index to gauge the nitrogen status of a plant.

Non-invasive measurements are completed by simply clamping the meter over leafy tissue. An indexed chlorophyll content reading is displayed in less than 2 seconds. Assess nitrogen needs by comparing your in-field SPAD readings to university guidelines. The SPAD 502 Plus can be purchased with or without a built-in data logger and measurements can also be geo-referenced. Research has proved a strong correlation between SPAD measurement and leaf N content.

Spectrum Technologies, Inc. has won 16 AE50 awards for technology innovation from The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers. Spectrum manufactures affordable weather and plant measurement technologies that help growers make better decision on crop inputs.

Becker Underwood Uses TDR300

E-mail Print PDF
As the Product Development Manager for Becker Underwood my work involves lots of field trials on development of novel wetting agent technology or customer support for current products such as Affinity. In order to carry out my trials I need an accurate, reliable, mobile and user friendly soil moisture probe. I have been using the TDR300 since I brought it from EnviroMonitors two years ago. I am very happy with this bit of kit and would recommend it. It is ideal for what I use it for. It has a range of probe lengths which are easily changed to adapt the equipment to your need. I use the shortest, 3 cm, probes to measure the water content change near the top of the soil profile. The long handle means you  don’t have to constantly bend down to push the probes into the soil. The easily removed probes mean they can be quickly removed for transport to avoid potential damage during transit. The TDR300 allows me to make many recordings when in the field and then download them down onto my computer when I am back in the office and analyse the data over a cup of tea. Dr Andrew Brown
