This unique Color Reference Board eliminates subjective measurements. The front side of the board is primarily pink with green and yellow disks set against a gray background at the top. These are used to compensate for different ambient light levels. The back side of the target board has four narrow loops that each have a piece of Velcro hook next to them. You can choose the side you are most comfortable holding the board from when taking the picture. The app uses the specific green and yellow color standards on the target Reference Board to calculate the DGCI and corresponding visual rating.

About the GreenIndex+ Nitrogen App

The FieldScout GreenIndex+ Nitrogen app utilizes the latest advancements in technology to measure plant health via the chlorophyll content (relative greenness) of plant leaves using a smartphone camera.  The app captures leaf images with a smartphone, calculates the Dark Green Color Index (DGCI), and displays a visual rating. As the chlorophyll pigment is what gives a plant its green color, measurements of the greenness of plant leaves can be used to help determine the overall health of the plant. By utilizing the averaging feature, growers can easily obtain greenness levels across field samples and compare them with samples obtained from a high-nitrogen test strip.  The app also incorporates widely-established nitrogen recommendation models developed by Iowa State and Penn State universities to generate fertilizer recommendations.
